Bespoke garden rooms, built for Cheltenham homes

Cube Garden Rooms is based in Cheltenham and Swindon, and Cheltenham is where much of our work happens. Seven of the nine projects in our portfolio were built in Cheltenham and Charlton Kings, from a sunken garden gym to a guest house with its own shower room.

Every room is made to order in the size and specification you need, so it can fit a narrow town garden or a larger plot on the edge of the hills. We design it around your garden and the way you want to use it, then build it on site. The average build takes around 8 days.

Do you need planning permission in Cheltenham?

Planning permission is not normally needed for a garden room, but it depends on the size, position and use of the room. Under the national permitted development rules on the Planning Portal, a garden room is usually allowed without an application when:

  • ✓It is single storey, with eaves no higher than 2.5 metres and an overall height of no more than 4 metres with a dual-pitched roof, or 3 metres for any other roof.
  • ✓It is no higher than 2.5 metres if it is within 2 metres of a boundary.
  • ✓It is not in front of the principal elevation of the house.
  • ✓Together with other buildings and extensions, it covers no more than half the land around the original house.
  • ✓It is not used as separate, self-contained living accommodation, such as a bedroom.

Local rules in Cheltenham

Cheltenham sits at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment. Beyond Leckhampton, Charlton Kings and Prestbury the land rises into the Cotswolds National Landscape, and parts of the town are conservation areas. On this designated land, outbuildings to the side of the house need planning permission, and in the National Landscape the total area of outbuildings more than 20 metres from the house is limited to 10 square metres. If your home is listed, permitted development does not apply in its grounds.

If you are unsure, check with Cheltenham Borough Council before you order. You can also read our planning FAQs.

How it works

1. Consultation and design

We talk through how you will use the room, your garden and your budget, then design a room to suit.

2. Secure your build slot

A 10% deposit secures your order, build slot and installation date.

3. Foundations

A pad or screw foundation is prepared. The ground needs to be flat; we can carry out groundworks for an extra charge.

4. Build and handover

The average build takes around 8 days. Rooms are completed to regulations and ready to connect to the mains.

Yes. Cheltenham is one of our two main bases. We have built garden gyms, garden offices, a guest house, a music room, an art studio and a storage room for customers in Cheltenham and Charlton Kings. See our projects.

Usually not. Most garden rooms are permitted development, as long as they meet the national limits on height, position and size. Different rules apply on designated land such as the National Landscape and conservation areas, and in the grounds of listed buildings, so check with Cheltenham Borough Council if your home is affected.

Build time varies with the size of the room and any extras, but on average a build takes around 8 days on site.

The cost varies significantly depending on the size, cladding, insulation and glazing you choose. Every room is made to order, so we quote for each project. Call 07977 102744 or request a free quote.

We take a 10% deposit to secure your order, build slot and installation date. A second payment of 30% is due before your installation date, and a third payment of 50% is typically due on the fourth day of installation. The final 10% is payable within 7 days of completion, once you are satisfied with your room.

Yes, but you would need to apply for planning permission, because it would be used as an additional bedroom rather than as additional living space.
